Biography

Hi! My name is Charlotta Bävholm, I'm a character artist based in Malmö, Sweden. My interest in art stems from being obsessed with animals, dinosaurs, fantasy and Pokemon when I was little. I started out with digital art quite young, at age 13, when I saw the fan art people made on Neopets; a virtual pet site I played a lot back then. Through that community I found out about deviantART, and since I already liked drawing, I decided to join. At first, I was just scanning my traditional drawings and tracing them into vector drawings in a program called Corel Draw. Then I tried out an art program my dad had lying around; Paint Shop Pro, where I started digitally painting with a mouse. About a year after I started, my dad gave me a Wacom tablet as a gift. I remember it was really hard to get used to, but as soon as I did, I loved it.

I painted almost daily while I was in middle school. In high school I started hanging out with people more, so I didn't draw as much, but when I finished school I decided I wanted to make art for a living. At first, I considered trying to get into a traditional art school, but most of them seemed really negative towards digital art. A friend of mine had heard about a university where they supported digital art, because it had a game development program. Being hugely into World of Warcraft at the time, game art already interested me, so I decided to apply there instead.

I studied 3 years at University of Skövde and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in media, communication and storytelling. While I studied I worked on 2 short game projects outside of school (none of them finished, but I learned a lot), had a mentorship at Digimundi, an internship at Ludosity Learning and participated in the game art exhibition Hjärta Spel at Tekniska Muséet in Stockholm. After I graduated, I won the Promise Award for best thesis in interactive media and e-learning. You can read an article in swedish about it here: HiS Nyheter.

I got my first job in game art at Paradox South in Skövde, 2014, where I worked on their own titles, Hearts of Iron IV and Europa Universalis IV. After one year, in 2015, I started my own company and became a freelance artist. This was also the year when I attended my first Artist Alley, at Närcon 2015. I attended A LOT of Artist Alleys, conventions and conferences after that. I was also a speaker and panelist at Sweden Game Conference in 2016 and 2017! I studied the Painting Drama course at The Oatley Academy in 2017, as part of Generation 6. All while freelancing and also working on my own projects.

In 2018 I started a new chapter in my gamedev journey, when I was accepted into The Game Assembly. There, I studied 3D art and as part of my studies I did an internship at Sharkmob, where I now work as a 3D character artist.
